Campus Quiz Results - Kolkata – KIIT Bhubaneswar wins Kolkata title

On a lovely Saturday afternoon the campuses from across the entire eastern region of India converged at Taj Bengal with teams coming in from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Kharagpur, Durgapur, Asansol, Bhubaneshwar.

Close to 270 teams and Pickbrain had to request those who were not taking the prelim to give preference to those who were attempting the 20 question qualifier. The feeling was that the QM and his team had perhaps made the Kolkata prelim a trifle tougher than it should have been. The prelim led us into the two wild card rounds, that were both won by IIM Calcutta, who were there in full force.

The final six at arguably one of India’s most passionate quizzing city were:

  • IIM Calcutta – Arnav Sinha, Vijay Anand
  • IIM Calcutta – Siddharth and Vikas Sahu
  • KIIT Bhubaneshwar – Manjit and Nishit
  • Indian Inst. Of Social Welfare and Business Mgmt. – Neelotpal Goswami and Dr.Jinu Mathew
  • IIM Calcutta – Shankar Karthikeyan and Siddharth Mohan
  • BIT Mersa Ranchi – Nikhil Kumar and Pranay Jha

The final was an absolute thriller, “the closest battle so far at Crucible 08” across India, as mentioned by the quizmaster. The teams scored from seemingly difficult posers and with barely 8 questions remaining as many as five teams had a chance to qualify into the national final.

On the final few questions with teams shuffling between playing cautions and backing their knowledge, it came down to the final question of the quiz where the duo from KIIT Bhubaneshwar – Manjit and Nishit inched past Indian Inst. Of Social Welfare and Business Mgmt. (Neelotpal Goswami and Dr.Jinu Mathew) and IIM Calcutta – Shankar Karthikeyan and Siddharth Mohan who were tied for the second place.

After the tie breaker, the Doctor and his team mate from ISWBM won the runner up title while the IIM’s had to settle for third and fourth position in a quiz that anyone could have won.

KIIT Bhubaneshwar – Manjit and Nishit the champions also became the first ever team from Bhubaneshwar to qualify to the national final of the quiz.

The event was perhaps best described by Bikash Behera of the Asian School of Business Bhubaneshwar who said “An enriching experience which widens our horizon and provides a new eye to see the world around. Pickbrain is a perfect blend of humour, wit and through understanding of quizzing”
