National University of Singapore wins the 2014 edition of Tata Crucible Campus Quiz, Singapore

  • The business quiz brings Singapore’s sharpest young minds together and tests their speed of thought and lateral thinking skills.
  • Rohan Naidu and Shivam Bhardwaj from National University of Singapore (NUS) became the new champions of the Singapore edition.

Singapore, November 4, 2014: The 8th edition of the Singapore’s popular inter-collegiate business quiz- Tata Crucible Campus Quiz concluded with an exhilarating final.

emerged as winners in a hard-hitting race to the top keeping the audience spellbound with their dazzling show of intellect and pulsating quizzing. Following the lead pair were first runners-up Karan Prasad and Sainyam Gautam also from NUS. The venue of the quiz was buzzing with excitement and witnessed a battle of wits as it tested young minds. Both teams will be invited to compete for the International Championship title with the other finalists at the International Finale to be held in India in early 2015.

After contesting multiple rounds of high energy quizzing, the duo from NUS were awarded a whopping cash prize of S$ 7,000 while the first runners-up Karan Prasad and Sainyam Gautam from NUS won a cash prize of S$3,000. The second runners-up position was sealed by Yadunund Vijay and Agrim Singh from Singapore University of Technology and Design who claimed a cash prize of $ 2,000.

Thrilled by their victory at the Singapore round, Rohan Naidu and Shivam Bhardwaj said, “Tata Crucible is a very special quiz for the both of us because it is the single grandest quiz event in Singapore. Winning a Tata Crucible is very satisfying given the high quality of questions and high standard of teams that compete. We are often asked how we prepare for Tata Crucible, and our answer is that quizzing is much more than a one day event. It is a lifestyle of curiosity and continuous discovery.”

Gracing the occasion with her presence and presenting the cash prizes to the winning teams, was Chief Guest Ms. Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education, Singapore. Highly impressed with the high levels of energy and passion for quizzing, she said, “I will have to say it was an exhilarating and exciting experience and have to congratulate all the teams for their amazing knowledge. We have all expanded our knowledge tonight and some of them were really tricky questions. Rigorous quizzes like these are the way to go because it prepares you to be quick witted, observant, smart. These are the things that you need in life later, and of course at even more exhilarated speeds. Quizzing is very much a total gym for the mind and I am glad to see that the Tata Crucible is just one of the many ways that the Tata group reaches out to the community, in particular, the youth in Singapore.”

This year, the Tata Crucible Campus Quiz received participation of 182 students in 91 teams (of two contestants each) from prominent educational institutions like Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Singapore Management University and SIM. The students were tested on subjects from the world of business and economy, including business houses, personalities, brands and markets, amongst other exciting topics. The preliminary round saw nearly 26 questions on various topics administered to all participants, followed by a wild card round amongst teams 7 to 14 from the scores, to select 2 teams who joined the 6 top scoring teams to make an 8 team stage final.

The final 8 teams on stage, all of whom were tested with five rounds of live, rapid-fire quizzing, included:

  • Ayush Kumar Pacheriwala and Jishnu Mohan from National University of Singapore
  • Ivan Chang Wei Lung and Abbas Ali Md. Irshad from Singapore Management University
  • Justin Wong and Teng Li En Derrick from National University of Singapore
The evening was graced by senior Tata leaders from Singapore and representatives from the local universities amongst others.

Tata Crucible seeks to bring together the sharpest young minds to take on the heat of a tough business quiz. The Quiz made its debut in India in 2004 and successfully generated a huge response in the very first year itself. It has since become an annual event.The Tata Crucible Campus Quiz made its international debut with the Singapore edition in 2007. It offers Singapore's student community a unique opportunity to involve themselves with the subject of international business, in an engaging and intellectually stimulating manner. The 2013 edition saw strong participation from campuses across the city-state, including NUS, SMU, NTU, SIM, S P Jain Center of Management and others, with NUS claiming all the top three places. The UK edition was launched successfully in 2008 and the 6th edition saw the participation of around 30 leading UK universities and colleges.In order to broaden the scope of the event, since 2008-09 the concept of the grand International Finale was conceived as a face-off between the top two teams from Singapore, UK and India. In 2014, ICAI team from Bengaluru was the National Champions from India. The team from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar was the overall International Champions of Tata Crucible.
